Simplicity can be fulfilling

Take a good look at this painting. How many colours do you think I used? Go on guess!  Three, four, five, six?

What did you pick?

The answer is three. Ultramarine blue, Titanium White, and Burnt Sienna.

What does this prove? 

‍

What it says to me is that you don’t need to make your life complicated to get a pleasing result. 

This painting was done as part of a portrait course. When the instructor said you can only use these three colours my jaw dropped.

Signposts are hidden within the creative process

‍

This exercise was a big learning for me. As a novice painter, you think you need to buy every tube of colour there is to do a painting. Well, you don’t: you need very little to get a pleasing result. 

The same is true in life. You can be very happy with very little. The secret is in blending what you have into a harmonious pattern that meets your basic needs.
