The Creative Spirit: Bursting With Creativity at Any Age

This last weekend I visited the Cezanne Exhibition at the Tate Modern (on until 12 March 2023). 

At the exhibition, I read the following words “During the last six years of his life Cezanne was pushing against mortality (he was diagnosed with diabetes) with bursting creativity.” Don’t worry, I am very healthy. 

What resonated with me was the phrase “bursting with creativity.”  As I am rapidly approaching my 78 birthday, these words appeared particularly poignant.

Bursting with Creativity

I am also bursting with creativity - in the four summer months of 2022, I completed over 40 paintings; many of which you can see on this website. 

There is, I believe, a strong link between creativity and the Soul. The Soul incarnates for three reasons: to self-express, connect, and contribute.

The Seasons of Soulful Expression

In the late 40s self -expression becomes important. In the 50s, connecting to make a difference becomes important, and in the 60s contribution becomes important. Thereafter, any one of these soul attributes can dominate your life. This time sequence can vary by a few years. However, in some younger people, those who have been brought up by self-actualized parents, these soul impulses can begin much earlier. 

Self-expression showed up in my working life through the creation of models and tools for personal, cultural, and societal transformation. Connecting to make a difference and contribution showed up through the creation of my leadership and soul-based teaching programs. Now creativity is showing up through my painting.
